Luke Donald Prefers Majors to Being No. 1

English golfer Luke Donald has put all his plans to reclaim the title of the world’s number one golfer on hold for the moment, as he turns his attention the Major titles. The 34 year old, who is much understated than his talent warrants had a brilliant 2011 season during which he stormed to the top of the golf’s world rankings and also became the first professional golfer in history to top the money list in the same season on both sides of the Atlantic. However, he relinquished his number one status to Rory McIlroy for the first time this year and although he managed to claim the title back again, he relinquished it once more last week, so much so that he is determined on claiming some Major titles ahead of the number one position.

Speaking to the media, Luke Donald stated that it has been a wonderful tennis match for the top spot between him and McIlroy, his mate, for the top spot. Donald came agonizingly close to toppling McIlroy once again at the recently concluded US PGA Players Championship where he needed a fourth place or better finish to reclaim the top spot but managed only a sixth place finish.

He added, however, that going back and forth as the world number one stops meaning anything after a certain period of time and that is what has happened to him as well. He stated that one doesn’t remember the world number ones, but the winner of titles and that is what he aims to do.

And he will get an opportunity to win his first Major title next month in San Francisco, as he embarks on the US Open, aiming to wrestle it, ironically, away from the hands of Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald is quite hopeful of his chances.
