Graeme McDowell – Finding His Feet

Graeme McDowell had a good start at Day 1 of the U. S Open. His 2 under 68 gave him a very good lead and he was one of the best starters. Four years ago, at Pebble Beach tournament, McDowell made his way to the World Cup radar to get his first major victory. The way he threaded his ball around Pinehurst, was almost suggestive of a replay on Sunday.

McDowell’s 68 was a typical US Open golf on a course that almost shocked the game’s power hitters. Playing against McDowell and smashing the ball 50 yards further off the tee did not give Rory McIlroy any advantage. A birdie at the last for a 71 was seemed just like a consolation. McDowell said “Rory played magnificently this morning. He hit some beautiful golf shots. I’d like to play like that sometime, but it’s never going to happen”. He also mentioned that with the nature of the course, there is not much of technicality that is needed; it is just with the positioning of the ball that you can make wonders. McDowell had an eagle, one birdie and one bogey to score his opening 68 at Pinehurst. It was a treat seeing him play since there were variations in his shots and he made best use of the moisture the course had after the rains the previous night.

McDowell also spoke about the course at Pinehurst. He had already played 6 holes in order to get ready for the majors. He also mentioned that it is very well maintained and there are strict rules that only players and caddies are allowed on the course. McDowell also mentioned about the Open Championship that will be returning to Portrush in 2019 – he has fond memories of that event and is very excited about the event where his brother Gary is a part of the organizing committee.
